Cognition Kit N-Back
Assessment of attention and working memory
Available on: Apple Watch, iOS / Android, Web-based via web browser on tablet or laptop/pc
Duration: 60 seconds
Created: 2017
Validated: 2018 against CANTAB
Used to date in: Phase II, Phase III and healthcare integration studies
The N-Back task is a continuous performance task that is commonly used as an assessment in psychology and cognitive neuroscience with demonstrated clinical sensitivity in patients with ADHD, depression as well as natural aging.
Evidence
Validated against CANTAB: Spatial Working Memory (SWM) with depressed patients in an NHS ethically approved study with depressed patients in the UK: Cognitive and Mood Assessment Data in Major Depressive Disorder Using Digital Wearable Technology
Results shared in JMIR 2018: Wearable Technology for High-Frequency Cognitive and Mood Assessment in Major Depressive Disorder: Longitudinal Observational Study. Results showed the Cognition Kit N-Back was significantly correlated with the CANTAB SWM assessment, and patients exhibited excellent adherence.
Cognition Kit DSST
Assessment of attention, psychomotor speed and visuoperceptual functioning
Available on: iOS / Android, Web-based via web browser on tablet or laptop/pc
Duration: 90 seconds
Created: 2019
Validated: 2020 against Pearson WAIS IV
Used to date in: Phase II, Phase III and healthcare integration studies
The Digit-Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) is a widely used neuropsychological assessment with demonstrated clinical sensitivity in patients suffering from brain damage, dementia, schizophrenia and depression, as well as cognitive functions that deteriorate with age.
Evidence
A study with Adams Medical - Validation of a Smartphone-based Digit Symbol Substitution Task in Participants With Major Depression – compared the Cognition Kit DSST against the Pearson WAIS III DSST. Poster results shared at ISCTM showed moderate to good agreement between the Pearson and Cognition Kit DSST at baseline and second visit and showed slightly higher test-retest reliability in the Cognition Kit DSST.
The Cognition Kit DSST was also compared to the Pearson: (WAIS-IV) DSST with depressed patients in a Validation Study: Mobile DSST on Cognition in Adults With MDD led by Roger S. McIntyre, M.D., FRCPC, Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology, University of Toronto, Canada. Poster results shared at Psych Congress 2020 showed the Cognition Kit DSST was significantly correlated with the Pearson DSST, and the majority of patients in the study preferred the Cognition Kit DSST. 87% of patients also reported that the Cognition Kit DSST was easy to use.
The full paper published in October 2022 on JMIR Mental Health showed that the assessments made using the Cognition Kit DSST were highly correlated with the standard paper-and-pencil version of the test, both at the baseline visit and at the end-of-study visit.
